In Val Senales/Schnalstal, the cross-country skiing season lasts almost forever: from September to April, you can let off steam on the trails side by side with real pros. Around the Adlernest you will find perfect trails for every level.
Winter hiking and snowshoeing
On quiet soles through the Schnalstal Valley
Ready for winter magic? Whether winter hiking or snowshoeing – snow-covered paths and glistening snowfields invite you to discover nature in a peaceful way. Past idyllic farms and through quiet forests, the trail leads to cozy alpine huts where a hot cup of tea awaits you. Feel the crunching snow under your feet and get a good dose of mountain air!
Winter and snowshoe hiking highlights:
- Lazaun circular trail
Start from Kurzras on an approximately one-hour winter or snowshoe hike on the Lazaun plateau (2,430 m). The Lazaun cable car takes you up to the mountain station, where the Lazaun hut is located. The starting point of the winter hike is just opposite. The highlight? A spectacular view of the surrounding 3,000 m peaks!
- Winter hike Unser Frau – Mastaunhof
This one-hour route starts right outside the doors of the Adlernest at the ArcheoParc parking lot and leads to the idyllic Mastaunhof in just over an hour. Also perfect for snowshoe hikers!
- Winter and snowshoe hike to the Bergl Alm
This two-hour tour takes you through the picturesque Lagauntal valley to the cozy Bergl Alm. The start of the trail to the Bergl Alm is at the valley station of the Lazaun cable car in Kurzras. Once you reach your destination, you’ve really earned a hot chocolate.
Cross-country skiing in Val Senales
Smoothly through the winter landscape
Whether you are a cross-country skiing pro or a first-time skier – the perfectly groomed trails offer you the perfect terrain. Almost all year round, from September to April, you can enjoy a mega cross-country skiing season here. Conquer nature, glide through snow-covered forests and enjoy the breathtaking view of the majestic mountains surrounding the Schnalstal Valley. Pssst… it’s not uncommon for you to bump into one or two stars of Nordic skiing.
Eagle’s Nest tour tips:
- For beginners and connoisseurs: the easy, flat Lazaun trail (2 km) is open from mid-December to April and offers a magnificent view of the peaks of the Val Senales Glacier. It starts behind the Lazaun hut.
- Advanced and professional skiers take note: From September to mid-December, the medium-difficulty, snow-sure Hochjoch high-altitude trail offers a challenging circuit of 5 to 10 kilometers – the highest cross-country ski trail in South Tyrol!

Tobogganing - at speed through the winter forest
Family tobogganing fun in the snowy Schnalstal Valley
After a short ascent, you can whizz through snow-covered forests on perfectly groomed toboggan runs. The fresh winter air tickles your face. Whether you cruise leisurely down into the valley or chase the ultimate adrenaline rush at full throttle – moments of happiness for parents and kids are guaranteed! At the end of the run, you can relax in the cozy parlor of an alpine hut and recharge your batteries for the next descent with a hot cup of tea or a hearty snack!
Toboggan runs around the Adlernest:
- Hölderle natural toboggan run in Val Martello
Directions: Hintermartell 17, 39020 Martello. From Goldrain at the traffic circle you go to Morter, from there you follow the road that leads into the Martell Valley. After a short ascent, the descent is rapid.
Length: 2 km
Difficulty: easy, suitable for kids
- Tobogganing in the Merano 2000 ski area
Access and ascent: The ascent to the starting point is easy with the Falzeben cable car. The toboggan run starts at the Merano 2000 mountain station and leads through the snow-covered winter forest to Falzeben.
Length: 3 km
Difficulty: medium, rapid descent through the winter forest, suitable for families and groups

Ski tours in the Schnalstal Valley
Winter adventures for summiteers and pleasure sports enthusiasts
The Schnalstal Valley is a true paradise for ski touring fans. Nestled between majestic three-thousand-metre peaks such as the impressive Weisskugel, it offers everything to make your heart beat faster – breathtaking views and plenty of powder. Thanks to the safe snow conditions and the practical glacier lift, the ascent to the three-thousand-metre peaks is made easy. Once at the top, all you have to do is enjoy and breathe deeply!
Whether it’s your first time on touring skis or you’re already an old hand – the mountain guides in Val Senales know not only the best-known routes, but also secret trails for real explorers. And after a day full of summit bliss? The two most important bases for ski tourers – the Similaunhütte and the Schöne Aussicht refuge – await hungry tourers with comfort and good food.
An absolute must-do – the ski tour to the Ötzi discovery site:
- Starting point: Grawand mountain station (3,212 m) or Schöne Aussicht refuge (2,842 m)
- Ascent: 700 vertical meters, approx. 3 hours
- Best time: November to May
- From the mountain station, the tour leads over moraine ridges along the right-hand glacier tongue of the Hochjoch glacier (approx. 2,700 m). After a short steep slope, you reach the flat glacier that leads to the Hauslabjoch (3,279 m). From here there is an unobstructed view of the stone pyramid, which can be reached after a short descent.
The return journey is via the ascent route and the valley descent to Kurzras. Suitable for intermediate skiers with alpine experience.

Alpine pastures for your perfect stopover
Whether for ski tourers, view connoisseurs or party people – the doors of the rustic mountain huts in Val Senales are open to you. Swap your snowshoes for a warming punch and make yourself comfortable on the sun terrace or in the cozy, warm parlor. The party animals among you can head to the apres-ski huts directly on the slopes or at the chairlift mountain stations. For example, the Teufelsegg Hütte or the Ötzi Biwak at over 3,000 meters.
Fun meets pleasure - on our very own Lazaun, your winter hiking break will be a real feel-good time. Directly at the Lazaun cable car mountain station, we await you with a place in the sun. The menu? Traditional Alpine fare, of course, refined with the special and regional Adlernest touch. And for the summit rush, there's our home-brewed Nest Gin!
The refuge at 3,019 m on the Niederjoch is the perfect base for alpine tours and circular hikes. The ascent from Vernagt in the Schnalstal Valley is one of the most beautiful in South Tyrol. Popular with ski tourers, mountaineers and snowshoe hikers.
Surrounded by the ice of the Hochjochferner lies the Schöne Aussicht refuge.
The hut is located directly on the Hintereispiste.

And if your kids are practicing hard in the ski course, you can burn off some energy on the fast descents. Our team of supervisors will pick up the little skiers from the ski school and take them safely to the Adlernest. Totally relaxed.
Snowkids-Ticket
With the Snowkids-Ticket, children born in 2015 and younger can ski all day long for just € 5.00 when accompanied by a parent. The offer is also valid for several children per family and for multi-day tickets.
Very nice hotel in a relatively quiet location. Here you are still far away from the usual tourism in South Tyrol. Very friendly staff, super tasty food and literally a "FAMILY hotel" (...).
